about

for a lot of artists the question of meaning seems essential. many will wait until they have this issue resolved before starting the work. a smaller number simply get on the work in the studio, finding meaning through activity and process. within this group, an even smaller number of artists blur the boundaries between genres and artistic disciplines to the point in which there is little distinction between sound and image (or music and painting). categories become an afterthought in the work of lance austin olsen, whose artistic inquiry refuses the either/or conundrum that causes so much anxiety for artists. he has found, through the actual work, that this conceptual trap, born out of written language in concert with european philosophy, has actually nothing to do with painting or sound, and the work is the evidence.
